APChemistry
Preparations & The Exam

Below is some advice and information that I can give to you as someone who has taken the AP chemistry exam.  The following is just a recommendation and not a claim!

AP Chemistry Exam:

A 3-hour examination covering a full year introductory college course in chemistry. It includes 90 minutes of 75 multiple choice questions with broad coverage and 90 minutes of comprehensive problems, essay topics, and questions requiring the determination of chemical reaction (net ionic). You may not use a calculator for the multiple choice section or for the first question in the free response section (net ionic). Any programmable or graphing calculator, except those with typewriter style (QWERTY) keyboards, is acceptable. You may not share calculators during the examination. A list of commonly used chemistry equations will be provided for limited use on the exam. The equation tables may not be used for the multiple choice section or for the first question of the free response section. You can find the previous AP Exam questions at ChemTeam.

Of the two part of the exam, I have found the open response section to be the most important part. That is the part that would most likely determine your grade.  Do the problems first and then the essays.  Show all the work, and be precise. Units are very important.  Make sure that all of your answers have proper units.  Essays will be on the main concepts of the course.  They are usually not very hard.  Problems also are not very hard.  You can expect at least one of the problems to be on the equilibrium.

Multiple choice section is the hardest part of the exam.  The problems are usually very hard and students usually won't have time to finish this section.  You won't need to do much math in this section.  Maybe some simple multiplication and division, etc.  You can expect graphs!!!  Look at the graphs of the book.  Make sure you understand what they mean.  Some of the questions are very long.  A question is not necessarily hard when it is long.  There will be for sure questions on labs.  So take the labs seriously and make sure you understand the purpose of each procedure.

Preparing for the Exam:

The most important part of the course is the equilibrium.  There are many questions on the AP exam in regard to this topic.  Make sure you understand this topic very well.  When studding for the exam, do this topic first.  The least important topic is organic chemistry.  There is usually only one multiple choice question on organic chemistry.  So do not spend so much time studding this topic.  Just know the basic and memorize the groups.  Know the periodic table trends well.  There will be for sure a number of question on the size of atoms, ionization energy, etc.  Another important topic of AP chemistry is balancing the equations.  There are many rules and exceptions.  Learn them all!!  Learn the solubility of different substances also.  Know what is a strong acid, weak acid, strong base, and a weak base.  On the AP exam there will be some questions on the physical and chemical properties of some important chemicals.  Those chemicals are usually the ones that you have played around with in the labs.  So once again labs are important.  Know how to find the order.  There will be many questions on this topic!  Know the thermochemistry well.  There is for sure one problem and may multiple choice questions on this topic.  Know the procedures for titration.  Know the phase diagrams and know how to interprate them.  The easy questions will be on Ideal gas law.  So know them well because they are easy!  Know reaction rates.  It is very important that you know how the rate of a reaction changes by the addition of a chemical or by change in temperature and pressure.  Know pi and sigma bonds and molecular structures.  There will one or two questions on nuclear chemistry.  So learn what alpha particles and other particles are.  Learn the quantum numbers and the bohr model.  But don't spend too much time on them.  Know how electrolytic cell works.  Know how spectrophotometer works.  Know all of the basic definitions well.  If you don't know them, you will be in a big trouble!  Know the boiling point freezing point and how they changes, etc.  Know how to calculate pH.  As you can see, AP Chemistry exams covers a lot of material.  That is why it is one of the hardest exams.  It is essential that you prepare yourself for the exam from the beginning of the year and not the night before the exam!

After you have reviewed for the exam, you should take a look at the previous AP exams.  Remember that you can get a good understanding of the exam itself by looking at previous ones.

What to Do on the Day of the AP Chem Exam:

By the day of the AP chemistry exam, you should be ready!  Do not at any circumstances try to study chemistry on that day.  Be relax, eat, watch TV, and even play chess, but once again do not practice chemistry on the day of the exam. Make sure you get a good sleep the night before the exam. Before you take the exam, you may want to go to the bathroom, drink water, and eat something with high sugar concentration, such as a chocolate.  Remember that the exam is long and you will not have any time to do anything other than doing the problems.   Make sure you bring with yourself couple of number two pencils and an eraser.
