    Interesting Science Facts
Science is not just a subject, it is a universe

Time Names Einstein "Person of the Century"

Albert EinsteinAlbert Einstein, whose theories on time, matter, energy, black hole, and space helped unravel the secrets of the atom and of the universe, has been chosen as "Person of the Century" by Time magazine. "The Naked King of Physics" contributed more than any other scientist to the modern vision of physical reality.  Einstein earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his theories of General and Special Relativity.  President Franklin Roosevelt was chosen as runners-up by Time.  Time also chose Amazon.com founder, Jeff Bezos, as its Man of the Year.

    Alien Screen Saver?

SETI Researchers at UC Berkeley are asking Internet users to help them find Extraterrestrial Intelligence (ET) signals.  In order to help, all you need to do is download a screen saver program from http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/.  When you don't use your computer, this software (screen saver) connects your computer to a radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico.  By connecting your computer to this telescope, your computer analyses a small amount of data observed by the telescope.  Once more computers use this screen saver, more telescope data can be analyzed, and therefore, a greater chance of finding an ET signal!

Speed of Light at 38 mph?

Slowed LightIt is amazing.  It is true.  It is a new revolution in our science and technology.  By shooting a laser beam of light through a super-cooled glob of a kind of optical molasses, scientists at Harvard University have been able to slow the speed of light to just 38 miles per hour (mph), 20 million times slower than its normal speed in vacuum (186,000 miles per second).  Even cars can go faster than this speed!  The substance that slows the light, called Bose-Einstein condensate, is a microscopic glob of atoms slowed to almost absolute zero.  But that is not all...  Scientists are now planning to use this idea to decrease the speed of light even 1000 times more.  The applications of this slow light is still unknown.
